This month, we celebrated the International Women’s Day (IWD), with a unique vision and perspective. The global theme, 'Each for Equal' underscored the role each of us plays on a daily basis to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, and collectively create a world of equal opportunities for all.

To mark the day we hosted an exclusive IWD Facebook LIVE Chat on March 5, 2020, with experts from the legal fraternity, civil society and academia working on abortion issues in India.

Our Panellist covered the grounds for understanding the 2020 IWD theme 'Each For Equal', particularly in light of the recent MTP Amendment Bill passed in the Lok Sabha.

MTP Amendment Bill 2020 Passed In The Lok Sabha

The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on March 17, 2020 after it was introduced earlier this month.

Before the bill was passed, Pratigya Campaign coalition came together with a group of civil society organisations to brainstorm on the now passed amendments so as to propose clear recommendations and draft suggestions for the Bill and MTP Rules. The coalition along with the civil society organisations has shared the recommendations with relevant stakeholders in government, civil society organisations and the large coalition has also shared recommendations with Rajya Sabha Members, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Women and Child Development and bureaucrats.

Fortunately, she gets help soon enough from a civil society organisation, and gets safe abortion services! While she was able to get the healthcare needed, there are thousands whose story does not end on this note. Many are unable to reclaim their lives. Abortion is healthcare, it is women's reproductive choice, and it must be respected.
