^*Abortion care services in India can be provided by a defined cadre of providers as specified by the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971. A registered medical practitioner means a medical practitioner who possesses any recognised medical qualification as defined in the MTP Act. All information will be protected by the Pratigya Campaign Secretariat.

Virtual advocacy training led by PRS Legislative Research on 'Advocating with Parliamentarians'

On 14th October 2020, a virtual workshop was hosted by Pratigya Campaign and led by PRS Legislative Research on 'Advocating with Parliamentarians'. The training took place on Zoom and was facilitated by Mridhula Raghavan, Program Officer at PRS Legislative Research, and Prachee Mishra, Deputy Head of Research, PRS Legislative Research. The facilitators shared the basics of advocacy with Parliamentarians and encouraged participants to share their learnings and experience.

The training witnessed the participation of 40+ attendees from partner organisations like Feminism In India, Love Matters India, The YP Foundation, Centre for Reproductive Rights, Ipas Development Foundation, Breakthrough India, Population Foundation of India, Tarshi and CREA. We also had experts from Asia Safe Abortion Partnership, Common Health and Foundation for Reproductive Health Services India.

Virtual Session with Feminist Approach to Technology (FAT)

In the lead up to the International Day of the Girl, observed on October 11th, a virtual interaction was organised on October 8, 2020, to discuss the ‘Abortion Laws in India’, its impacts on the lives of pregnant persons, and the necessary actions needed for its up-gradation.

This session was hosted by Feminist Approach to Technology and was attended by young adolescent girls from Delhi, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. The Secretariat had an engaging interaction with the participants and shared knowledge with them on the MTP Act and MTP Amendment Bill 2020.

Availability of Medical Abortion Drugs In Modern Retail and Online Pharmacies - A Foundation For Reproductive Health Services India Study

Foundation for Reproductive Health Services India produced a factsheet on 'Availability of Medical Abortion Drugs In Modern Retail and Online Pharmacies'. Top 11 chain pharmacies were contacted on phone to check if they stock and sell MA drugs. 48 outlets spread across eight cities (Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune) were called anonymously and were asked if they were stocking MA drugs. Eight online pharmacies/portals were contacted to find out about the availability of MA drugs. All these portals requested for a prescription, which was uploaded, and answers were received through chatbots or computer-generated services.

Findings:

Out of the 8 online chemists contacted, only 2 online pharmacies stocked MA drugs

60% (29 out of 48) modern retail chemists were not found to stock MA drugs

38% (11 out of 29 outlets) surveyed were not being authorised to stock or sell MA drugs

16 retail chains mentioned the requirement of prescriptions for selling MA drugs

Mankind's Unwanted Kit was also the most common brand stocked across states
